About Us

Montgomery Mosaic originally started five or six years ago after someone threw pork roll on the car of a local Muslim man. A group of Montgomery residents decided to take action and created Not In Our Town Montgomery that worked toward acceptance and respect of differences, education and anti-racism. After a while, the name was changed to Montgomery Mosaic to reflect the diversity in our town. The organization provided speakers, panel discussions, interfaith prayer services, videos and opportunities to come together as a community to work through and discuss challenging national and global issues and to show support for marginalized groups. The Pandemic and life in general slowed the progress of Montgomery Mosaic and no events were scheduled for a couple of years.

In the past few years, politics in our country have become polarizing to a greater degree than most have seen in their lifetimes. In 2023, we had a Board of Education election that turned very ugly. Meetings, which for years were dry and uneventful became drenched in incivility and vitriol. A small, but very vocal group of fear based citizens verbally attacked and disparaged anyone who disagreed with them in person and on social media. Issues pertaining to which books should be read in schools and how to support and protect our LGBTQ+ youth were raised and debated leaving many kids feeling vulnerable and attacked.

And then on October 7, the Israeli/Hamas War started and there was a rise in Anti-Semitism and Anti-Islamic sentiment. The lives of our citizens of these faiths were thrown into turmoil leaving them to feel vilified and devastated as their friends and family members were killed in the war.

But, the underlying beauty and compassion of our residents rose to embrace and support them. One of our board members who is Muslim, along with her friend who is Jewish held Interfaith prayer services at their homes, their synagogue and their mosque. People of many faiths gathered in support of our neighbors. It was then that the talk of re-starting Montgomery Mosaic began.

And here we are with a renewed mission of Embracing Differences and Building Community. We believe that each of us is a unique, multi-faceted individual who adds to the composition, texture and beauty of Montgomery. The different facets of our identity make Montgomery a more interesting place to be and should not only be accepted and respected, but celebrated.
